Meet Gloria
Former California State Senator Gloria Romero is a nationally recognized leader on education reform and school choice. First elected to the State Senate in 2001, she represented East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley and rose quickly through the ranks, becoming the first woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader in California history. She was widely regarded as one of the Legislature’s most effective and forceful leaders.
Prior to the Senate, Romero served as Majority Whip in the California State Assembly, on the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees, and on the Los Angeles Elected Charter Reform Commission. As Chair of the Senate Education Committee, she became one of the most influential voices shaping California education policy.
Romero authored landmark legislation such as the Parent Trigger and Open Enrollment Act, the first laws in the nation to give parents real authority over chronically failing schools. She has been a consistent advocate for charter schools, parental empowerment, and merit-based education reform, believing education to be the central civil rights issue of our time.
Raised by her father, who worked on railroads, and a mother with a sixth-grade education, Romero earned a PhD from the University of California, Riverside, having first-hand experience in how education empowers the American Dream. She went on to serve as a professor at Cal State Los Angeles, where she was named Professor Emeritus. In 2024, citing the Democratic Party’s abandonment of working-class families and parental rights, she left the party and became a Republican.
Now, Romero is running for Lt. Governor of California to continue her legacy of fighting for quality education reform, as well as to reduce our state’s cost of living so that we can restore opportunity, affordability, and the California Dream.
On the issues
Gloria Romero’s Plan for California
The Lieutenant Governor’s job isn’t ceremonial –and it shouldn’t be a “parking spot” for a politician to wait to “fail up” to becoming Governor in the future. It’s hands-on. Gloria Romero will ask the hard questions, challenge the status quo, and bring a little common sense (and backbone) back to state government.

Education: Show Up. Speak Up. Fix What’s Broken.
As Lieutenant Governor, Gloria won’t just hold a title; I’ll show up. The LG sits on the boards that run our universities and colleges, and she intends to use that seat. California’s higher education system should reward hard work and ability; not lower the bar and hope nobody notices.
If you’re admitted to college, you should be able to do college-level work. That’s not controversial, it’s common sense. Gloria will fight to restore merit in admissions, protect academic standards, and stop setting students up for failure.
And let’s be clear: no student should be threatened with who they are or what they believe. Jewish students, and students of every faith and background, deserve safety, dignity, and equal treatment on campus. No student should ever have their life or physical safety threatened with who they are. Gloria will hold administrators and university officials accountable to ensure non-discrimination in access to every campus and academic programming.
Gloria will proudly stand up for women’s sports and Title IX. Fairness matters. Women deserve a level playing field, not excuses.

Community Colleges: Stop the Scams. Start Serving Students.
Gloria believes that California’s community colleges are “the Ellis Islands of higher education” and are supposed to be the gateway to opportunity, not an open invitation for fraud. Recent reports show widespread abuse of the application system, and that’s stealing resources from real students and working people.
As a governing board member, Gloria will push for serious oversight, real consequences, and basic accountability. Taxpayers deserve to know their dollars are helping Californians learn job skills, not disappearing into a broken system.
And this starts earlier. If students graduate high school unable to read or do basic math, that’s not compassion, it’s failure. Gloria will fight to more fully integrate our K-12 system with higher ed so that our education system is, truly, a public education system for kids from Day 1, which actually prepares kids for college, careers, and life—not just a “public works” program for adults in the system.

Public Lands, Coastal Policy & Fire Safety: People Over Paperwork
The Lieutenant Governor plays a major role in California’s land and coastal policy, and right now, California is burning while bureaucracy holds meetings. That’s unacceptable. Gloria will lead on restructuring and streamlining commissions that answer to Sacramento special interests, rather than looking out for the needs of people and communities wanting to rebuild their lives.
From Paradise to Malibu, the Palisades, and Altadena, families have paid the price for bad policy, slow permitting, and leaders who care more about process than people. Gloria rejects a “Let Them Burn” malfeasance. Gloria will be a strong, common-sense voice for fire prevention, smarter land management, and faster rebuilding when disaster strikes.
We can protect the environment and protect communities. Gloria will collaborate with federal partners where it makes sense, cut through red tape, and push policies that put people, not paperwork, first. Gloria will also work with federal partners to safely provide for uncovering untapped energy reserves.
